Biographie
Né le 5 mai 1944 à Salisbury, en Angleterre, John Rhys-Davies a suivi les cours de l'University of East Anglia, où il a fondé la Dramatic Society of UEA Norwich. John Rhys-Davies entame sa carrière au célàbre Madder-Market Theater de Norwich avant de décrocher son diplôme de la RADA. Il jouera dans plus d'une centaine de pièces dont 26 de Shakespeare où il incarnera tous les personnages, d'Othello à Macbeth en passant par Claudius ou Falstaff. Il a aussi joué plusieurs saisons à la Royal Shakespeare Company.
John Rhys-Davies débute au cinéma dans Contre une poignée de diamants avec Michael Caine. un rôle bref puiqu'il meurt avant le générique. Sa filmographie compte plus de 80 films, dont Les Aventuriers de l'Arche Perdue, Indiana Jones et la dernière croisade, Victor Victoria et bien d'autres. Grand collectionneur d'automobiles, Rhys-Davies a joué dans de nombreuses pièces au théâtre, comme Le Misanthrope, Hedda Gabler et de nombreuses pièces de Shakespeare. Il partage sa vie entre Los Angeles et l'île de Man.
Il a été cité à l'Emmy pour son rôle à la télévision dans la mini-série Shogun. Il a été l'interprète de Sliders, les mondes parallàles, Les Incorruptibles, I, Claudius, The Naked Civil Servant, War and Remembrance parmi de nombreux téléfilms et séries.
Sa formidable corpulence lui a valu le rôle de Gimli le Nain! Gimli est certainement le personnage le plus coquace des films et John Rhys-Davies sait mieux que quiconque apporter de l'humour dans une scène tendue. Il peut remercier son fils de l'avoir convaincu d'accepter le rôle... En effet, interpréter ce nain ne fut pas une synécure. Car il fallait compter plus de cinq heures de maquillage par jour. De plus, l'acteur a développé assez rapidement une allergie aux prothèses... ce qui lui posa quelques problèmes pendant le tournage !
